General Conference opens with the delegates showing their support for Equality

 

Branch delegation preparing for a busy day at CWU#16

- Motion 5 is carried as conference gives full support to Scotland No.2 branch in their fight to get David Mitchell reinstated.

-Motion 7 Calling for conference to challenge the indignant manner in which many disabled people are treated by the Government in relation to the unjust stopping of welfare payments is carried unanimously

-Motion 8 is carried which asks the NEC to work with the TUC, Labour Party and other organisations to get a law introduced regarding food waste by supermarkets.

 

Dave Ward moves Emergency motion E3 and starts the debate regarding membership of Britain in the European Union. Following some excellent and passionate debate the motion is carried and conference supports staying in the EU.

 

 

Jeremy Corbyn speaks passionately in support of The CWU and trade unions, he talks about the important issues facing our workers is Royal Mail, The Post Office and BT.

To resounding applause he states that he believes that Royal Mail and The Post Office should be brought back together and should be put back into public ownership. He outlines his support for the NHS and Junior doctors and tells Jeremy Hunt to "back off".

 

- Motion 40 regarding introducing a new system for expense payments is remitted to allow further discussion and talks with HMRC

Woody opposes motion 41 regarding a report/review on a new model for branch finance rebates on the basis that we would need to assess the effectiveness and impact of the CWU redesign project, the motion was not carried

 

 

-Motion 46 asking the NEC to formulate a strategic plan with recommendations with regard to CWU education and training is not carried

-Motion 47 requesting that we use the full political resources of the CWU to support and defend Jeremy Corbyn's radical and progressive policies. The motion was carried unanimously.

-Motion 53 regarding greater participation by the CWU at Hazards Health and Safety conference which would include increasing the sponsorship of the conference, facilitating a stall and sponsoring a safety rep seminar. The motion was carried.

-Motion 56 instructs the NEC to campaign to ensure that employers and the wider trade union community fully understand and embrace the concepts of sex and gender differences on issues of health, safety and welfare, the motion was carried unanimously.

-Motion 61 asking the NEC to commission an immediate review into the Legal Service dept and Union Line. The motion is not carried.

-Motion 62 instruct the NEC to investigate the problems with the CWU web site search function is not carried as there is separate project to upgrade and refresh the site.

-Motion 68 instructing the NEC to work with other interested organisations to obtain from Government their agreement to prioritise prostate cancer care and to campaign that the offer of screening is available to all men over the age of 35. Following some excellent and emotional contributions the motion is carried.

-Motion 69 conference is concerned about the increased rate of suicide within young men under the age of 45, the motion calls for the Executive to work with charities to raise awareness of the help and support available in addition to arranging a campaign to encourage more of our male members to highlight and talk about issues that are causing them a concern. The motion is wholeheartedly supported by conference and is carried unanimously.

Emergency motion E4 is carried unanimously which sends a message of support and solidarity the Verizon workers that are taking action to protect jobs.
